To gain access to the NHS market, it is essential to identify and demonstrate the purpose and potential impact of any new health technology. Alongside evidence of the improvements in clinical outcomes, there is also the need to understand the financial impact for the NHS, both from the perspective of the provider and the user or buyer. So, when developing innovative medical technology, it is important to conduct health economic forecasts and analyses at an early stage in the product development cycle.
Course overview
This two-hour course will introduce you to the basic concepts of Health Economics required for start-ups and small businesses. It will provide you with an introduction to the basic concepts of health economics and how to use them to demonstrate the value of your innovation to decision makers (whether that be purchasers, budget holders or investors).
Topics covered will include:
- Basic principles of Health Economics
- Types of Health Economic Evaluations and how they fit into the product development cycle
- What data needs to be collected to build a health economic model?
- Populating models: pilots and trials vs published literature
