The Health Enterprise East and Eastern AHSN team’s had an exciting June hosting two Clinical Entrepreneurs Forums in Essex and Norwich respectively for fourteen of our healthcare innovators. Over the course of the two days clinical and academic colleagues drawn from our NHS Member trusts and their associated academic partners attended the events to access a range of IP, regulatory, health economics, technical and commercial advice to progress their idea.
The Inventive ideas presented have the potential to transform modern day healthcare. Ideas ranged from digital tools, such as a physiotherapy app to aid patent recovery, to more conventional medical devices, such as a device to protect the surgical instruments currently used in cardiology examinations.
An overview of Health Enterprise East (HEE) and the innovation process, presented by Tim Fishlock (Head of Technology Transfer at HEE), was shortly followed by an introduction to the Eastern Academic Health Science Network (AHSN). The Eastern AHSN are co-hosts of the forum and Joanna Dempsey presented delegates with fantastic examples of how innovations, founded within the NHS, have progressed and impacted upon healthcare worldwide.
Delegates or ‘idea owners’ were then invited to present their ideas in 3-minute pitches to the mixed audience of innovators and ‘domain experts’. For the remaining bulk of the day, the idea owners received one-to-one mentoring and coaching from a range of specialists in the healthcare field. Experts from commercial, design, engineering, regulatory and IP backgrounds kindly gave up their time to mentor the idea owners. There was also time for some informal networking throughout the day, it was great to see how ideas evolved over the course of the event!
When asked about the day’s highlights, the idea owners enjoyed the sessions with the domain experts the most.
“The one to one sessions were really informative“
“Excellent agenda & knowledge of specialists”
“Really grateful for the opportunity to discuss ideas with different experts.”
The day concluded with a reminder for all attendees to make use of the support on offer from Health Enterprise East, the Eastern AHSN and the Medtech Accelerator to further their innovations. Finally, thank you to all those who were part of the event and to our sponsors the Eastern AHSN for their continued support.
